Certification and Regulation
Regulations In Canada
Laser clinics can be very profitable businesses. In Canada laser therapy is still an unregulated business and all that is required to open a business is a business licence. It is not necessary for Canadian manufacturers to provide licenses in order to operate the machines, and manufacturer’s training usually follows. Only Health Canada can license the machine itself. Laser treatments in Canada are largely unregulated, and most procedures can be conducted by just about anyone with a light to no training.
Our goal and mission is to provide the most advanced, and supportive laser training found any where in the world and to ensure all laser practitioners are providing the highest standard of care possible. London Laser Training offers professional development courses and is not a career college under the Ministry of Career Colleges.
Safety
Canada’s federal government controls the sale, lease and import of aesthetic lasers, as per the Radiation Emitting Devices Act and laser hair removal and cosmetic devices must meet the requirements of the Act. Laser therapy facilities are advised that they should only purchase laser devices that have an active Canadian medical device licence in accordance with the Medical Devices Regulations. A laser safety program is essential for all laser facilities. It must include provisions for the delegation of authority and responsibility, describe the laser classification and hazard evaluation process, and address training requirements. It must also provide direction on the designation of laser controlled areas, signage, engineering controls, protective equipment, and administrative/procedural controls. Lastly, in order to be complete a laser safety program must include regular surveillance and adequate record keeping.
It is the responsibility of the owner to make employees aware of the requirements for safe use of laser devices. It is then the responsibility of employees to follow the instructions they have been given.
